Amazon.Com Inc is applying to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for permission to deploy more than 4500 additional satellites as part of the company's efforts to provide broadband networks to areas around the world that lack high-speed services.

Amazon.Com Inc has previously said he plans to spend at least $10 billion to build 3236 such satellites through his Kuiper project. Later on Thursday, Amazon.Com Inc asked FCC to approve the deployment of a total of 7774 satellites for the project.

On Monday, Amazon.Com Inc asked FCC for approval to launch and operate two prototype satellites by the end of 2022. Amazon.Com Inc said the satellites will serve families, hospitals, businesses, government agencies and other organizations around the world, including areas that still lack reliable broadband. Despite the increasing level of global connectivity, only 51 per cent of the world's population has access to the Internet, which is even lower in developing countries, with only 44 per cent.

In 2020, FCC approved the Kuiper project to establish a low-Earth orbit satellite cluster to compete with the star chain network being built by Tesla, Inc. (TSLA.US) CEO Musk's SpaceX company. SpaceX has deployed more than 1700 satellites.

Amazon.Com Inc recently accused Musk of ignoring the rules imposed by the government. The Blue Origin company of Amazon.Com Inc founder Bezos challenged NASA, which NASA had awarded a $2.9 billion lunar lander contract to SpaceX, but the judge dismissed the challenge.

Earlier this week, FCC approved Boeing Co's application to launch and operate 147satellites to provide high-speed broadband Internet access. Boeing Co first submitted an application to FCC in 2017, seeking approval for the deployment of a V-band constellation consisting mainly of low-earth orbit satellites.

Boeing Co said this week that the company is optimistic about the multi-orbit future of satellite technology. With the increasing demand for satellite communications, it is necessary to diversify between different orbits and frequencies in order to meet the unique needs of customers.
