Fifth Third Bancorp's earnings per share and revenue were better than expected, but its shares closed down 0.3 per cent.

Traveler property Insurance Group, a component of the Dow, closed 1.6% higher after the company reported a quarterly profit that beat expectations.

Consumer goods giant Procter & Gamble Co closed down 1.2%. Procter & Gamble Co's earnings were better than expected, continuing a strong growth trend, but the company said it would raise the price of its products to make up for rising goods and transportation costs. Procter & Gamble Co also warned that inflationary pressures could persist.

Walmart Inc closed up 2.1 per cent after Goldman Sachs Group added the retailer's shares to its "sure buy" list and was bullish that the stock would rise nearly 40 per cent.

As of Tuesday morning, 82% of the s & p 500 companies that have reported earnings per share beat expectations. Corporate profits will grow by 30 per cent in the third quarter, taking into account announced results and forecasts for unannounced results.
