April 17 news, according to foreign media reports, the production capacity of chip contract manufacturers is generally tight this year, but at the critical moment of the need to increase production capacity, some factories have stopped production because of accidents. The massive power outage caused by a blizzard in Texas in February led to the suspension of production at the factories of Samsung, NXP and Infineon in Austin, and a fire broke out at Renesas's chip factory in Nake, Japan in March. As a result, a number of production lines have been shut down, of which 2/3 are automotive chip production lines, which have not yet been restored.
According to the latest foreign media reports, the wafer 14A plant owned by TSMC, the world's largest chip contract manufacturer, also had a power outage due to an accident this week, resulting in a temporary shutdown of some production lines.
The power outage at TSMC's 14A wafer plant occurred on Wednesday. During construction that morning, an underground power line at the plant was accidentally cut off, resulting in a power outage. Although TSMC relied on the factory's backup generator to mitigate the impact of the power outage, power supply was restored at 7 p.m., but the plant's production was affected.
According to foreign media reports, the power outage at least led to the suspension of the P7 production line of TSMC wafer 14A plant, affecting the production of 40000 wafers.
In the report, foreign media also mentioned that TSMC's wafer 14A plant mainly uses the process of 40, 45, 65 and 90nm to contract chips for relevant customers, not advanced 5nm and 7nm, so the loss is relatively small. However, foreign media said in the report that the wafer loss caused by the sudden power outage is expected to be between US $28 million and US $35 million, but some English media reported that this part of the loss will be fully borne by the insurance.
