Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced on Tuesday that Malaysian officials will go to the US for dialogue following a 24% tariff from the US.

Anwar admitted at the Asean Investment Conference 2025 that changing the US' "underlying intent" may be difficult, but there could be room to influence policy implementation. He emphasized Malaysia's preference for "soft diplomacy of quiet engagement" over "megaphone diplomacy".

Malaysian representatives will join others in negotiating the US' reciprocal tariffs of 10% to 50% on all trading partners, with the EU, Canada and China planning retaliation.

Malaysia has said it will negotiate with the US, its third-largest trading partner, and stressed US claims of a 47% tariff on its goods imported into Malaysia are exaggerated.

Anwar said Malaysia will adapt, is diversifying and strengthening trade ties with other regions, and while committed to US trade relations, will protect its economic interests.
