According to the WeChat account of the Fujian Provincial Consumer Rights Protection Commission, it and the Fuzhou Consumer Rights Protection Commission used online and offline methods to sample 59 ready-to-sell coffees from 20 coffee sales units in Fuzhou (including 30 offline and 29 online). The samples involved mainstream brands such as “Lucky,” “Starbucks,” and “Lucky Coffee.” Results Low levels of the carcinogen “acrylamide” were detected in all 59 samples. According to industry insiders, acrylamide is an organic compound mainly formed during heating and cooking of high-carbohydrate, low-protein plant-based foods. Mechanistic studies have shown that long-term exposure to acrylamide can cause brain lipid metabolism disorders, induce oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and damage to the blood-brain barrier. It is a potential carcinogen and is a class 2A carcinogen (although it has a clear carcinogenic effect in animal tests, the results of population studies are inconclusive).
