On May 22, American semiconductor and display equipment supplier Applied Materials said that the company plans to invest 4 billion US dollars to establish a research center in the heart of Silicon Valley with the aim of promoting the development and commercialization of basic technology needed by the global semiconductor and computing industry. Applied Materials said the research center, called “Equipment and Process Innovation and Commercialization” (EPIC), will be built in Sunnyvale, California, and put into use in 2026, creating as many as 2,000 engineering jobs. The center will undertake about $25 billion in research work over the first ten years, bringing together employees from research universities and major chip manufacturers such as Intel, TSMC, and Samsung Electronics. Applied Materials says it will invest in new facilities within 7 years and hopes that the US government will pass the “Chip Act” to provide subsidies. (Interface News)
