US Options volume sets new all-time record as 59.2 million contracts change hands in nearly 9.5 million executions!
Extraordinary trading day as broad averages sold off 2 to 3% and Cboe VIX lifted 14 points to 37%, the highest level since early November, while a number of highly shorted shares exploded to the upside amid a frenzy of short-squeeze speculation.
Total index option volume near 2.9M contracts was 70% above recent levels, with VIX option volume of 1.25M contracts marking a six month high. ETF flow of 14.6M contracts was 50% above normal, with puts leading calls slightly, while single stock option volume near 42M contracts was 55% above normal with calls leading puts 3:1.
